Elasmo-L
mailing list
The Elasmo-L discussion list is a forum for broad
discussions of research, teaching, and conservation of
Chondrichthyan fishes. The mailing list operates under the aegis of
the
American
Elasmobranch Society (AES), and is dedicated to the
concerns of its full, student, and affiliate members. Although this
list is intended to promote communication among AES members, all
serious students of chondrichthyan biology are invited to
participate. Best reserved for serious amateur naturalists or
scientists.

European
Basking Shark Photo-Identification Project
The European Basking Shark
Photo-Identification Program should be considered as a catalogue or
database of images rather than a collection of individual sharks.
Contributors are encouraged to provide more than one image because
different views of the same basking shark may prove useful in
comparisons with photographs submitted by others.

International
Shark Attack File
The International Shark Attack File is a
compilation of all known shark attacks that is administered by the
the American
Elasmobranch Society and the Florida
Museum of Natural History. The American Elasmobranch Society is
a professional organization comprised of international workers
studying sharks, skates and rays. More than 3,200 individual
investigations are currently housed in the File, covering the period
from mid-1500's to present. Many of the data in the File originate
from the voluntary submissions of numerous cooperating scientists
who serve worldwide as regional observers. Regional observers
forward investigations of attacks in their areas for integration
into the File. Data submitted to the File is screened, coded and
computerized. Hard copy documentation, including original notes,
press clippings, photographs, audio/video tapes, and medical/autopsy
reports, is permanently archived. The File is utilized by biological
researchers and research physicians; access to the data is granted
only after careful screening on a case-by-case basis. Direct access
by the press and general public is strictly forbidden since much
sensitive information is considered privileged. Requests for summary
information and non-privileged data are made to the File's director.

Italian
Great White Shark Data Bank
The presence of the great white shark,
Carcharodon
carcharias (Linnaeus, 1758) in the Mediterranean Sea has been known
for a long time. Although it has been recorded on many occasions by
several ichthyologists, this species has never been the subject of
extensive specific studies in these particular waters. To fill the
several gaps in our knowledge of this species, a private program of
data collection called the Italian Great White Shark Data Bank (Banca
Dati Italiana Squalo Bianco) has been initiated in 1996. The work
that followed permitted to collect substantial information about
historical and recent records of this species from the Mediterranean
Sea, realizing a database that has no precedent for specificity and
completeness. Over 400 records of Carcharodon carcharias in the
Mediterranean Sea have been collected, corresponding to about 450
specimens. The search for data on white sharks from the
Mediterranean is effected by analysis of sharks recorded at fish
markets, location and study of materials preserved in natural
history museums, bibliographical research, collaborations with other
researchers, coast guards, anglers, fishermen and private citizens.
The results of this study are regularly published in scientific
journals. Moreover main information obtained are presented to the
public in several wildlife magazines.

Centre for Shark Research: Biology of Sharks and Rays
Founded in 2001
by marine biologist R. Aidan Martin, the ReefQuest
Centre for Shark Research is dedicated to shark and ray
conservation through its scientific research and public education
programs. The Centre maintains research equipment and facilities,
reference collections of fossil and extant elasmobranch specimens, a
scientific library, elasmobranch data bases, and public education
materials.
